Help me please with XP updates ...
Win Xp Home SP2 , a 11 days old install, activated by phone yesterday.
passed the genuine tool thingy...when downloaded the microsoft anti-spyware tool. Problem is : Windows updates is totally screwed... 1- Going manually to windows update site don't work... im looking at that green scanning bar and nothing happen... i suppose i could leave it for hours and it will stay that way. 2-i have that little yellow shield in the system tray saying that updates are ready to install. When i clik on it it says : initialize ..... but nothing happen or install... 3-When i turn off my computer ... it won't .. because it want to install updates .. same as #2 happen here .. .im looking at the blue screen saying ''Don't turn off youre computer while update are installing '' .. i know that nothing happen ... 4- When i go in the security center in the Automatic updates control panel ... all options are grey out .. can't change anything any ideas for the fix ??

Are you connected to the Internet? If so, how? Are you behind a Firewall? If so, which?

Try going to your Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Uncheck everything and retry. Also worthwhile to go to IE > Tools > Manage Add-ons > Addons that have been used by Internet Explorer > and make sure that you have WUWebControl Class Enabled... try hitting the update button to make sure that you have the latest version.
Also are you running any antispyware/antivirus suite that could be interfering with ActiveX controls? |

You can delete the activex object Go to: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files (location may vary as per your system root and windows directory) .. right click on WUpdate class and select remove.

Open up your registry editor (start > run > regedit) and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\
Delete the values: AUOptions and NoAutoUpdate Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate and delete DisableWindowsUpdateAccess |

I deleted the AUOptions value in the resgistry because it was the only one present on my system ( normal ?? ) .. didn't make any progress ..
well this problem do not bother me very much now that i can acess windows update web site now. The system report that automatic update is ON .. so it will work too .... i can live with the fact that i can't change this setting. |

Err .. have you checked to see if the update service is running? Go to : START > RUN > services.msc
There should be a service called Automatic Updates .. is this started? Is this set to start automatically? Try making it automatic if it isn't already done so. Have you done a comprehensive spyware and antivirus check? Using something like housecall.antivirus.com? There are malware that prevent automatic updates from working properly as well. In addition, certain firewalls also do this to systems (outpost firewall is one that I've found) Here are some additional links: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q323184 |
