Angry Problem installing 2nd instance of XP pro

I’m having a problem with installing a 2nd instance of XP (pro) to my D drive. I want this to be a dual boot, so I assume you need to install the 2nd XP when the 1st XP is operating so it creates the dual boot.

If this is correct, the problem is, once I boot to the 1st XP and go to install 2nd XP I get an error message telling me the original version is newer than the version I’m installing from the disc. At that point I can go no further.

My questions are:

Do I need to install 2nd XP from the 1st install on my C drive to create the dual Boot?

If not, than how do I create a dual boot from installing directly from the CD rom to the D drive?

If I do need to install while 1st XP is running, is the error due to having SPII installed?

How many drives do have? In order to dual boot OS's, you need more than one partition. Do you have more than one physical disk? If not, do have at least 8GB left on the one your using?

Why do you want a dual boot of the same operating system?? If what your thinking is for backup purposes on a second harddrive in case your primary one crashes, then a better way is to just clone your primary drive to the secondary drive using a cloning program like Norton Ghost, or most harddrive manufacturers have a utility to do it if you have one of their harddrives. You can find it on their website..

If you're simply trying to use the second drive for back up, there is no reason to even install an OS on it. Jumper the drive as slave, format the drive and configure everything to save to "D".

I have several drives and NO I'm not trying to use one for backup. That’s what my 3rd and 4th drives are for. My current installation is over 2 yrs old with too many program and several conflicts that I can not get straight. I just want to start fresh.

The purpose of using a dual drive is use the one I currently have for daily tasks while I slowly set up desired programs on the 2nd installation. Then eventually remove the 1st drive.

I have been able to accomplish the dual boot and now I have 2 instances of XP. 1 on my master drive 160 gb - Par 1 (2 - 80 gb par) and one on my slave drive 160 gb - Par 1 (2 - 80 gb par).

My concern is the removal of the C drive and Dual Boot. I originally tried to install a clean copy of XP directly to the D drive. The problem came when I would boot the D drive instance of XP, I could not see my C drive as the D dive now became the C drive.

Does any one have solution for removal of the dual boot and the main drive that holds the Boot sector? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated. I want to keep the old Xp for now and continue to gradually build the new drive.
