Crashes when hardware removal attempted in device mgr.

Tried and failed 4 times to install a USB/IDE adapter on an old Thinkpad 560x notepad with Win98. (so I can attach a CD drive and load programs) This has left 4 "unknown device !" in Device Manager. Everytime I try to remove one of them I get a blue screen crash. Short of a windows reinstall is there anything I could try?
Thanks
