Problem on Boot Up!
I am using Wndows XP Home on a 3 month old computer..
After the Boot Up, none of my icons appear on the screen. In fact nothing appears, just the normal windows background. no start button, no icons. i can't right click and get the windows properties... nothing. Anyone have any ideas why this occurs and what i can do to fix it? Thanks!

Can you get into safe mode?
Hold down F8 at boot up and the restore to earlier date.

That happened to me once, it turned out my system was clogged with dust bunnies. I'd check for dust, and if there is a lot get a can of compressed air. Remember no vacuumes, I hear they can create a sort of "electrical field" that may charge some sort of build up electrical static that may damage something.

Well, I fixed it... Thank you Pam.
I am not sure what I actually did to fix it, though. first things First.. "No, it does not happen all the time, just this one time.. took 2 days to get it working though.. Only took 1 hour after going into Safe Mode" Speaking of Which.. I went into safe Mode and tried running my Panda Virus Software. it would not work, it kept hanging up and not functioning properly. So I unistalled the Program. After uninstalling, I had to reboot the computer. But before doing so, I went into system tools to try a "Restore System", but it said, that I did not have a "Restore Point" so that failed. So, I just rebooted the computer and it came back to life, like there was never a problem. |

Hmmnn...
I can get paranoid sometimes, like now. Go into your System Restore and disable it and reboot. Go into it again, re-enable it and set today as the date, that way you'll have a restore point to start with. Now go here and run housecall : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Your problem maybe that, for whatever reason, Panda didn't load. It could just be computer weirdness or you could actually have encountered one of those hacks that play havoc with security software. In either case check out your computer at housecall. |

By all means try again and I'll post some other on-line scans for you to try if housecall won't work.
But you have to know that there is stuff out there that, in addition to messing with your installed anti-virus will see to it that on line virus checkers won't run. The fact that you could get into safe mode was a good sign but you're worrying me. What firewall do you have and what anti-spyware apps ? If it's the link you're having trouble with, I'm not so I can't tell what's going on, google Trendmicro and get to housecall that way ( If you get redirected when you try it then you have malware). |
