Help on installing xp
Im re-installing xp on my computer, but I have a problem. the problem is that because i installed service pack 2, it says
Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. So my question is, how to boot cd on restart |

If you simply want to do a format and re-install, you need to set the CD drive to boot before the Hard Drive in BIOS. In most cases, thats under advanced bios settings, and potentially under another sub menu along the lines of boot order.

Restart your computer. On post there will be an option that says "press delete to enter set up". It may also be F1 or F12 but usually is delete or F1.
This will take you into set up. Select advanced BIOS settings (or options). Under boot order, set to have the CD ROM drive be the first boot device. Place the XP disk in the CD ROM and select "exit saving changes" from the set up menu. -Kev

Well, I found out how to uninstall service pack 2 from windows, but the only problem is, none of the ways worked. Ive tried starting up to cd drive first, but that didnt work.(The disk is just a burnt one from Coast Guard.) So, I yhink Ill just go to Win Borg.

I had one like this the other day that would not boot from the CD (brand new Microsoft OEM PRO) even when setting CD ROm as all of the boot devices.
Upon installation, this computer had weird problems right from the get go. After updating from Windows update the machine wouild go into a continuous loop of post, boot, shut down...over and over again. I finally had to remove the hard drive, slave it to another computer and format it, then re-install. -Kev |

Hey, I thought I'd glom onto this thread, since the problems sound remotely similar.
I've been trying to re-install windows xp on a machine that needs a clean-up. I want to reformat the hard drive, give it new & roomy life. I got the boot order using the dvdrom drive first, but then the system can't 'see' the hard drive, and says, "no dice, fool". I tried disconnecting usb add-on stuff, to no avail. At least digging into the guts of the thing got me to clean the poor thing. The only theory I have is it must have something to do with the sata hard drive. Here's the belarc profile. Tell me what you think, folks. If the SATA drive is not being automatically recognised, then you'll need to load the drivers during the setup process. You'll be prompted to "press F6 to specify additional devices" very early on in the process.
These drivers will be available from on your motherboard manufacturers' website. Put the drivers on a floppy disk, and insert it when prompted. FK |

Thanks, Freakitchen!
It sounds like common sense when you say it.

No problem. And it's not common sense, we all learn these things by having exactly the same problems
