massive xp selections

my dads computer is going crazy ever sinse a power disruption , basically once in a while it selects all the icons when you try and click on one or it selects 16 of them , it does this on the desktop and in folders , i usually end up with 16 power points opening up or 30 my documents , im getting anoyed of trying to figure out whats wrong with it , so far all i can think is the three month old wireless keyboard and mouse are going nuts , and the shift key is acting weird maybe . the keyboard is clean so im stumped , it only does this once in a while and it is fixed by a restart . (hardware from memorie , asrocks motherbaord p4 2.6ghz . 120gb western digital hd , lg cd-rw ,lg cd-r , a couple fans , some sound card im not fimilar with , and an onboard graphics chip . ) this isnt my computer and im so tiered of fighitng with it , alongside fighting with all my other comps . any ideas?

Wireless keyboards and mice can operate on different channels. It sounds like when the power was disrupted that the channels got out of sync.
There is a button on the back or side of the keyboard and on the back of the mouse that needs to be pressed at the same time you press the button on the mouse/keyboard transmitter . That should get them on the same channels. Also, the problem could be caused by failing batteries. HTH

Try a wired keyboard and mouse to rule out faulty keyboard and/or mouse. The BEST way to troubleshoot any hardware issues is by substitution.
