Question Why DHCP Contrller service running?

Any idea why a database server would need the DHCP Controller service running? This server is not setup as a DC or DHCP server so why is the DHCP controller service running. How do I make sure that by turning it off this service will not affect other performances? Right now this service has dependencies on the services below:

Computer Browser
Netlogin
Server
Workstation

I tried to disabled the DHCP controller service but apparently I can't because those services above needs it. I have to find a way to remove the dependencies first if in fact DHCP Controller service is not needed.

Your help is appreciated.

Is it the client or the server service that is running? No way to get the client to stop but you can stop the server.

It is the DHCP Controler service which I believed is the server and not the client. Yes, you're right. I do want to keep the client running. I just want to disabled the server service down because it's a taking a port that is being used by my backup server agent. But as said in my post, I can't shut the controller serivce down because it has al these dependecies. How do I remove the dependecies?

I've looked at the control panel and I don't see it installed in there. Could it be a virus?

The strange thing is when right click on the DHCP Controller service and go into property, the Path to Excecutable showed: C:\Windows\system32\dhcp\dhcpcl.exe but when I try to find this files through the Windows Explorer, I do not see this file nor the dhcp folder. However, I did find the dhcpcl.exe file in the system32\Catroot folder.

I don't think I have heard of a "DHCP Controller" service. DHCP client service, yes. DHCP server service, yes. But not DHCP Controller.

Go to Add/Remove Programs, then click on Add/Remove Windows Components. See if it is listed anywhere like under "Networking Services" or IIS. If it's not there, it may be a trojan.

I tried the Add/Remove Windows Components under "Networking Services" or IIS and it's not installed. However, this service is running when I check the Service. Any idea how I would check for trogan virus? I already ran symantec antivirus and found nothing.

Try Spybot, AdAware, and the online scanner here.

When I Google dhcpcl.exe, I don't get anything good; certainly not anything official.

Make sure you have the option for "View Hidden OS Files" selected in your folder options. After you have selected the option, try browsing to the path again.

Okay, I use SOPHOS to remove the virus but now the four services I mentioned in my original thread did not start. I will need the following services to start, correct?

Computer Browser
Net Login
Server
Workstation

I think I will especially need the Net Logon service and not it's not started because it depends on the DHCP controller service which is not been removed.

You are going to have to manually edit the dependencies of those services; those settings are in the registry. This article may be of assistance: http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=win2000

Many thanks for the link. I removed all the dependecies to the dhcpcl.exe but the services still will not start. Do I need to reboot the server?

The error message it as below:

Could not start the Workstation Service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependcy service or group failed to start.

All four services would have this similar message.

This is your database server? I hope you have a current backup, because if you reboot it now, you might not be able to get it running again.
