Lengthy time for explorer to work on startup...

When I boot up, sometimes it takes about 5 minutes for my windows explorer to function. After it works, it works fine...its just very aggrivating. Any ideas?

believe it or not: spyware. it causes all kinds of odd behaviors. I have seen alot of computers that do this, and alot worse, when malware is present.
When my system starts acting up, that's the first thing I look for.

Agreed. I would suspect spyware first.

Is the pc part of a network and or have USB devices attached?

Have you gone into MSCONFIG to see how many things are loading at startup?

You don't mention what kind of printer you are using? Have you just installed anything new recently? I recently started having the same problems you are having and traced it back to my HP 1210 all in one printer. I unplugged the usb cable the printer was attached to from my pc and all was well again.

There's my winner. I have a HP1210 as well...usb of course. May I ask HOW you figured on the printer of all things. Last place I would have looked.

I keep my pc crystal clear of spyware.

I think I figured it out because I opened my task manager at the same time and noticed that a file that began with HP was running. I unplugged the printer and Wa-La! no more slow downs. I wasn't able to figure out why it was happening. I was thinking about upgrading printers and with the deal that Epson had on their RX620 Photo printer/scanner/copier I couldn't pass it up.

It's the HP background monitor software initializing all the functions of the multifunction device.

Do you think that may be an indication that the device is about ready to die? It's kind of interesting that this isn't the only other incident of this happening in the past month that I've heard of.

During bootup, Windows has to go out and look for the devices to make sure it's there cause it's loading at startup. Thus the slower bootup.

The printer works well doesn't it?

Yes, the printer does work well, not nearly as nice as my new Epson RX620 Photo / all-in-one. The thing is that this just started happening about a month or so ago, it isn't like it was happening from day one. There lies the problem, which it must be.

Mine runs fine as well, still does. And just to be a little more clear, it is NOT all the time, but often enough to adgitate me. Reboots wouldnt get through it, just gotta let it do its thing...kinda like a....well, you know.
