Exclamation out of frequency......

I changed the resolution of desktop from the right click menu on desktop...but unfortunately it was not supported and then it showed an out of frequency message. then a countdown started for power saving which basically shutdowns the monitor in power saving mode i guess....but now i cant change the frequency or the resolution even from the safe mode.

so if there is a setting in the registry to change the resolution and frequency...please help...i'm quite comfortable with the registry...so no problem there.

Go into Safe Mode and open Device Manage and then remove/delete the Display Adapter listed and then reboot to Normal Windows.

What are your complete system specs? List the parts by brand and model including the monitor.

When in Safe Mode edit your boot.ini file and add /basevideo to the end of the line that boots your OS. For example if I did this on my system the boot.ini would look like

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /basevideo

This forces XP to use low res video and you should then be able to alter your frequency back to the correct setting. Remove the /basevideo from boot.ini and reboot.

Hey, it works....it booted directly into the lowest resolution that was possible and i successfully changed the resolution and refresh rate.

Thanks a lot ....pointd
i have been trying to find a solution to this problem from a long time...this may sound stupid ...but i would reinstall the whole OS again just because i dint know what to do to change the resolution. i even searched the registry for the entry where the settings are stored so that i could change it directly from the safe mode...but i dint find it.

well thats a different story...this solution is good...now no more reinstalls....cheers
