Did you install WinXP from a genuine MS WinXP installation CD or a burned copy?

Is that copy of WinXP installed on any other computers that have been activated already?

Has that installation of WinXP on your computer been activated yet?

Well, I dont know if I am correct but the SP2 was not possible to install on the WinXP Pro, so Microsoft released a new copy of WinXP Pro with SP2. I remember doing the same thing as rmourar did and it gave an error message (dont ask me what error message...its been a long time now...i dont exactly remember) and now I use the built-in version. But the SP2 can be installed directly on WinXP Home, hough I dont know why. And yes it has to be activated on only one PC.

I am not going to say your wrong, but I would question from where you got your information.
I have never ran into any problems installing sp2 on any xp system .

A friend of mine owns a institute and he has 6 license copies of Win XP pro...and the OSes were installed before the SP2 was released. So he ordered the SP2 CD from the microsoft website. we tried installing the sp2 and it would give the error message. so it is a personal experience.
we asked the dealer and he said that a different key has to be put to install the sp2.

Hi rmourar,

These issues may occur when permissions for one or more registry keys are restricted in a way that prevents the update of those registry keys. A failure to update a registry key may cause the Setup program to fail.

The official Microsoft support website has more information on this.

Hope this helps.
