.NET framework..

... Is there any benefit from installing the Microsoft .NET framework? I've heard that the .NET framework inproves performance in some cases, gaming etc. I been tempted to install it from the Windows Update site I frequent.. There is the 1.1 and the 2.0 versions I see.

I always thought .Net slowed my computer down. I think it uses a lot of ram.

I think it's required to run certain programs or code. I don't know that I'd install it unless I knew there was something I wanted to run that had to have .NET installed.

.NET 2.0 is probably already installed on your computer. The installation packages will install it automatically. It refers to several dll files that are used by programs for class libaries.

It shouldn't slow down your computer. There is a .NET 2.0 SDK that will install IIS if you download it. It is used for development purposes. That will slow your computer down because it is running services in the background. To check, go into services.msc and see if IIS is running.

Do you know if there's a way to check if .NET is actually installed already?

I think a game or program...something installed .Net and I uninstalled it back when I had 256mb of ram on my family's computer and it was slowing me down. I didn't have a problem removing it.

.net

Well, as of now, I am not using anything that requires the .NET framework.. so I am gunna leave it alone for the time being. Back in the day, when I had my ATi Radeon on my system, .NET framework was required for full Catalyst control.. so I had it installed back then. I also had a problem uninstalling .NET 2.0 when I was using it. Had to do a full repair install of Window to get things working again.

Yeah. I hated the Catalyst Control Center. I'm still using the Control Panel from version 5.11.

I know you need .net for stuff like SQL server/IIS, and some other specialty programs that require database connections. I dont believe it is necessary for day to day operations or gaming.
