Cannot Add New Folders In Win Me

Have done new install of WINME (yes I said WINDOWS Mellenium) on SOYO SY-6Ba+14 motherboard with Intell Pentium 700 mghtz CPU...not overlcocked. (These are older but still serviceable parts. Wisecracks expected, say anything you wish; but, try and be helpful.)

BIOS and all drivers updated

512 meg of ram (256 dimms x 2)

Nvdidia GE Force2 MX100/200 Video Adapter NEC c 70 19inch monitor.

Problem I cannot add "New" folder either on desktop or by dbl clicking mycomputer icon and selecting file. "New" folder does not display in either place. Per Microsoft bulletin of June 2003 this is a problem with intel pentium chip. Not clear, to me, as to why. Had same installation previously w/o this problem.

Thanks all for any assistance.

Along with glc's request for the MSKB article #, my question is: did you disable the Soyo's Bios AntiVirus before installing Windows? Having the Bios AntiVirus active can cause strange issues. There are also a lot of overclocking options for that board - so it can't hurt to double-check your settings to make sure you didn't accidentally overclock something.

If either is the case, try reinstalling & see if that clears it up.

Best of luck

[P.S .. this reply was typed on a Slot I PIII 633 running Windows 98se - I enjoy taking it out for a spin and visiting this Win9x forum now & then. . . a fun break from Win2000/XP on the newer boxes]

Spent last many hours trying to find that MS Svc Bull....could not.

Did find a workaround, r/click deskbar, select toolbars, add new toolbar and there I can make a new folder which I can rename later. Cumbersome but works.

When I did this install the bios anti-virus was disabled and overclock options in bios set to cpu freq 100mhz x 7 {P3 700), Power to Normal, AGP freq 1.0 =100. These same settings were what I had when I built this box lo many eons agon.

Problem is probably old guy with old mobo and old OS. Having fun anyway thanks GLC and Gary and anyone else

While I'm not sure how your system came across this situation in the first place, there is a Registry tweak that is supposed to help (Win9x/Me) posted at WinGuides. It involves the following Registry value:

System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New]
Value Name: (Default)
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}

The link to that fix at WinGuides is http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/82/

The Microsoft Knowledge Base article for this problem relates it's origin as a problem that can originate with Internet Explorer updates via Windows Update & the same Registry value mentioned in the WinGuides tip: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;180257

Seems like the edit might be worth a try.

Gary/GLC thanks much.

Reg entry was the fix. Do not know why this problem ever popped up as I have installed/re-installed this version of WinME on this computer several times. Many thanks.
