Restore XP System Sounds

System sounds and sounds on AOL and AIM don't work. Sounds on web sites accessed through IE (without going through AOL) do work, such as when playing a video on CNN.com. Also, CD's play with sounds. So it seems like sound card and speakers are okay. Something has apparently trashed the XP sound files (dll's?). Is there a way to fix without reinstalling XP? I'm wondering if the system restore function might work.

Are you sure they're not just disabled from the Control Panel and AIM options? Try going through the AIM directory and seeing if you can play the sounds separate from the program.
