sys check scheduled from XP to ME
I accidentally scheduled system check (c/properties/tools/error checking (check now)/automatically fix file system errors) from second partition with windows XP to first partition with windows ME, and now when I boot win ME it stops at wallpaper appearance and nothing makes it continue.
Tried with reinstall win ME but same thing happens. Where does windows writes scheduled sys checking (I’m puzzled with this because it’s another partition with another OS) – how to unschedule sys check? Please help. |

Did it do the check the first time you rebooted to XP? If so, it's done and won't do it again.

Hi jojo80
Like glc mentions, I don't think you should have any problem with checkdisk anymore. However, it sounds like your attempted re-install of WinMe didn't go well. If you want to try that again, see if any of the info in this thread helps http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846 If you perform a full over-the-top, it's likely the WinMe bootloader will overwrite the WinXP bootloader (ntldr), so you'll then need to either run a repair re-install of XP ( http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...74#post1055774 ), or boot into the Recovery Console and try "fixboot" or "fixmbr". The Recovery Console commands should only be used if you have some experience using them, since all data on partitions can be lost if done incorrectly. A repair reinstall, or a successful "fixboot" procedure, should restore your dual-boot options. Best of luck . . . It’s probably something broken in my winME more serious than the supposed syscheck problem. I did all kinds of reinstall of winME: plain, over-the-top, with switches p, f. Also, tried to rebuild vmm32.vxd (renamed .bak then reinstall win). Nothing works – wallpaper appears and won’t go further. Good thing is I can start some diagnostic programs (msconfig) with progman.exe (when change line “shell=” in system.ini). I also looked at bootlog.txt and it seems that something like this hog the system: “EnumeratedTapeDetection (Tapecontroller\tapedetection\0000)”. I read somewhere about deleting part of registry with enumerator settings and than reinstall win (don’t know exactly the string). Win XP on other partition boot and work normally. I have use ME for long time and just need to have OS other than NT family. Also tons of settings and programs installed. Should I post my bootlog.txt somewhere? I’ll post it here if can. Any thoughts? |

If you can get into regedit, you can try the "ENUM trick" - you won't have to reinstall Windows. This will force a total re-enumeration of your hardware.

. . . hopefully, trying the Enum trick will work. If it doesn't - when you were reinstalling WinME, did you remember to disable the Bios Antivirus protection? This can cause odd problems. You could try again with that disabled (then re-enable it again when you are done).
Also, if you have any USB peripherals that aren't absolutely necessary (in other words, anything other than a keyboard or mouse) - unplug them from the system while you try your repairs. Especially troublesome are USB multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copiers & USB wireless devices. . . . Gary |

BIOS virus protection is not enabled – never is, no USB (not even enabled in BIOS).
I tried ENUM trick and it’s actually went trough well, but didn’t solved the problem. Apparently hardware configuration is good, and windows just can’t load its “shell“. Probably registry is broken. I remember that first time I reinstalled windows it performed a major repair of registry. At the time I consider that normal. Well, I must wipe my tears and install new copy of windows. I’ll try just to change directory and not to format C. Should I delete some files in root of C, or maybe something else also to avoid interference with old copy? Or it will be brand new registry anyway? I’m afraid that installer will read some old system settings, and I want to be clean as a whistle (if already lose program installations). |

It would be a shame to have to reinstall all your programs and personal settings if you don't have to. Here's one more thing you can try:
Boot WinMe to the WinMe boot menu - and select the "Step-By-Step confirmation" option. This should let you know exactly where the boot is hanging up. If you have a Registry Cleaning program around, you could also try that. I see mentions of Easy Cleaner and CCleaner - I'm fairly sure CCleaner has a free-for-personal-use version. If you need help figuring the spot the boot stops at - post the step it hangs at here & we'll have a look. . . . Gary |

I already tried those things. I putted registry trough extensive fixing with program jv16, and it went for 5 hours of repairing, but problem persisted.
Step-by-step goes trough well and windows starts to load after it, but stops at wallpaper. So problem is in the “top” of windows, that is explorer. And, I was right. And stupid also, not to figured it out much before knowing that. My subkonces was telling me that for some reason. I forgot that I have IE6 installed. So I reinstall IE6 and…….my ME is singing again. I’m glad the problem is solved, but I’m not happy with my self right now. Thanks Gary for your support, you are a kind man. I was ready to give up, but your enthusiasm makes me shake my noodle harder. Zoran, Europe |
