Unable to boot into Windows.

Hey technicians!
I have Windows xp pro and I can't load to windows, only to the "black screen" (safe mode, last good configuration, start normally etc..) everytime it reboots. I tried all those options, nothing worked. No repair option is available when I tried to fix it with the cd. In the recovery console I tried: chkdsk /p, fixboot, and when I tried chkdsk /r it goes past 70, 80% maybe even higher, but then comes back to 50% or so. I cancelled it because it was going forever. What else can I try to fix it ? Any input greatly appreciated. tx

If chkdsk /r won't finish, you could have a bad hard drive on your hands. Download and run the diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer.

I downloaded seagate diagnostic utility for my st340810a hd and it found one bad sector. Is it possible that because of this I have those problems? Is there any way to fix that sector? Maybe LLF would help? I did this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 and it helped so now I can boot to windows but I have another problem: When I went to add/remove programs to get rid of malware, there aren't any programs displayed. Is there a way to fix it? Or is my windows so corrupted. tx

Time to contact Seagate for a warranty replacement. Bad sectors will multiply once they start.

The reason there are no programs listed in add/remove programs is because the procedure you followed replaced the software hive of the registry with the default "as installed" hive - which is no software installed.

hey, tx for the reply glc!
1. why do you think it's eligible for the replacement? here's comp by the way http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...04774967759786
2. Is there a way to fix it? One more think I skiped parts 2,3 and 4 of this manual- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 because I don't know if it's really necessary to do it. Is it?
3. Also, could have (that procedure) deleted other programs or any files?
thank you again

Oh.

That's a "U-series" drive. It's a cheap, slow, and unreliable drive. You can TRY to see if it's still on warranty - http://support.seagate.com/customer/...validation.jsp

No, you can NOT fix bad sectors, you can only mask them - and as I said, once they start, they are like cancer.

No, the procedure only replaced parts of the registry. Your files should all still be there.
