Unhappy Turn on computer get message OS not found

Hello everyone this problem is not mine but my cousins whom I'm trying to help get her computer back running again. Ok here's the story, she turns off computer one night the next morning turns it on and she gets the message on a black screen "OS not found". She can't get to the BIOS or anything else. What steps should be taken to get this puppy running again?

She is running XP Pro I'm not sure if she has SP2, I'll try and give as much of the computer specs that I can remember.

Asus P3V4X mobo with a slot 1 connector(Award BIOS PCI/PNP686)
Intel Pentium III 866 MHz 370-pin
2 modules of 256MB PC133 SDRAM by Kingston
WD 20GB HDD
Creative Sound Blaster Live
Asus V9200 SE/T 64MB AGP 8x
Enermax 300watt psu
DVDR/RW, CD-RW and Floppy don't know brand names
1 Asus case fan in front

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd try replacing the IDE cable to the hard drive first.

Then test the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility.

Thank you Cricket for your reply. Since the hdd is a WD, which version of Data Lifeguard Diagnostic should I d/l the one for DOS or Windows or does it matter?

Download the one for DOS, because you will have to boot with a floppy to test the drive.
