Unhappy NEC Versa E680 laptop problem

Hi all,
my friend got a problem with her laptop. The problem started off with booting up slow to Desktop. It got hard time going into the WINXP loading screen. (The screen between BIOS bootup and WINDOWS DESKTOP).

So i helped her to do a recovery using the recovery disc.
It happens that after recovery, it the problem still exists. I notice that after the drive converts from FAT32 to NTFS cause the "slow down".
The slow down is very slow. It takes about 15min to boot to desktop.

Then i mess around with the FDISK tools, and the system got worst.
After FDISK, it was required to FORMAT the partitions created.
When formatting C:, I encountered "Trying to recover allocation unit".
After awhile, it shows:
"Not ready"
"Format terminated"

Can anyone assist on this?

(Additional)
If I did not do a FORMAT, it will still run the recovery disc, however, it prompts me to insert "Master CD 1".
I cannot locate the CD. I think it's not provided by NEC.

The solution is to replace the hard drive.
