Exclamation yellow exclaimation point

this evening when i sat down at my computer i heard a sound that sounded like something snapped. a few minutes later i discovered it was shock of static electricity when i saw a spark travel from my leg to the case. everything seems to be working fine. the only problem i have noticed is there is a yellow triangle with an exclaimation point (like the one in the message icon) in the system tray sometimes. I've tried clicking on it to find out why it's there but it just disapears only to show up a little later. Any ideas what this may be?

It's Windows Security Center informing you that either:

1) you need to download a security update
2) it's telling you that you need to update your antivirus or fiddle with some settings
3) it's telling you that you need to fiddle with your firewall or something
4) something similarly related

i've got all security updates downloaded, anti-virus is up to date, don't use software firewall just the router firewall. and no i don't have a UPS. this is very puzzling.

there was one other thing i forgot to mention, don't know if it's related or not. in attempts to figure this out i've rebooted several times tonight. one time i got a message that there was an ip adress conflict, but i am using static ip adresses on my network and i'm positive there are no conflicts. i'm pretty sure this was just a fluke as it only happened once.

Could be the one saying you have limted or no connectivity, as if your computer suddenly dropped it's internet connection, then got it back again.
That symbol would look like two tiny monitors covered with a yellow triangle and an exclaimation point.

i looked in the event viewer and there are 3 different types of errors that occurred last night. The first one is an application error for the wmi adapter and it says the service failed to open. Then under system there is one for atapi which says the ideport1 did not respond within the timeout period. The there are about 20 for tcpip which say there is an ip conflict and gave a mac adress for the device with the conflict. However after looking for the device with that mac adress it turns out to be this computer. I don't understand how it can have an ip conflict with itself?

i've tried changing the ip adress to another unused adress but it still says there is a conflict.

I get IP notices once in a while too. Best way to clear it up is remove power from your cable/dsl modem and from your router for about a minute. Then plug in the modem, wait for all it's lights to become solid, then plug in the router. You may need to reboot the pc's too although most times I don't need to.

well the problem seemed to disapear all by itself. if it's gone great if it reapears i give up because it's taking to much of my time when everything seems to be functioning normally.
