Desktop icon question

The fonts in my desktop icons have shadows behind them (when they are against a light backdrop). Is there a way to get rid of the shadows? (makes it hard to read the words).

Right click an open area of your desktop, select properties>appearance tab>effects button at the bottom right>uncheck the "show shadows under menus" box. See if that helps. You may need to try the Clear Type and Standard settings in the "smooth edges" method box to see which is better with your monitor.

In Control Panel, double click the System icon to open the system properties dialog. here, on the Advanced tab, click on the Settings button under the heading Performance, and you will be at the Visual Effects dialog. In this dialog, disable "Use Drop Shadows for Desktop Icons", by clicking the box next to it to remove the tick. Now click Apply look at your desktop, and then click OK, if you are satisfied with the result.

Be warned, however, that disabling this item will result in desktop icon labels appearing against a solid background, as in Windows 9X/ME and Windows 2000.

The best way for you to improve the visibility of your desktop icon labels is to set the font color fro them to white or other bright colour (Desktop right click>Properties>Appearance>Advanced, and your desktop background to a dark or contrasting (or complementary) colour.
