Gate Way G6-266M

I am reformatting my Gateway G6-226M, but there is a problem. I have to choose between like 20 drives, and I do not know what to choose. I have seareched around and have found nothing yet.

Not sure what you mean by "choose between 20 drives". How many hard drives do you have installed? How many partitions are there?

Ok, need some more info. What operating system are we talking about? What exactly are you doing when you get these drive choices? Reformatting ususally only involves a Boot Disk and the operating system disk for 98xx/ME or just the OS disk with 2K/XP.

Sounds like you are trying to low level format the drive with the BIOS - don't do that.

If the hardware on the Gateway G6 266M is original, it might be a good idea to run some diagnostics just so you know you're not wasting time on dying parts. MemTest86 can test the memory ( http://www.memtest.org ) & a disk diagnostic can be downloaded from the website of the hard disk's manufacturer. Some manufacturer's downloadable disk utilities can also do a zero-write of the drive, if you are trying to wipe it clean. (Like glc mentions, if you were in the Bios & considering a low-level format from that, don't. Use the hard disk manufacturer's utility [such as DataLifeGuard for Western Digital, Powermax for Maxtors, etc.])

It can be tough to find drivers for the older Gateways - I don't see them listed on the Gateway site for download anymore (though they might be tucked away in a corner that I missed). I think the 266M had both onboard sound (SoundBlaster?) and onboard video (based on Chromatic Reseach's MPact2). Driversguide has some of their drivers, though.

Does the system currently boot successfully (either from hard drive, floppy, or CD)?

. . . Gary

[P.S. -- just saw your other thread - with the mention of using a Recovery disk. Are you fairly certain you have all the disks necessary for the Restore? Some recoveries require more than one disk. --- Also, if you left a diskette in the floppy drive by accident, and it's not a bootable floppy, you will see that message "Operating System not found".]
