Activating XP home

Can anyone help with this problem. My grandaughter has loaded her xp disc on to her computer but cannot activate it as she is not connected to a phone. I have tried to do it but i am ADSL and when i get to activate page it tries to connect using a dial up internal modem. I believe that the ADSL disc has been loaded on to her computer but i cannot get at it.I cannot get further than the log on page, have tried to access in safe mode still no luck but doing a search i can find the ADSL files but cannot do anything with them. Is there any way i can get into programmes normally?

The activation screen should have a phone number on it. you'll need to use it.

If you are trying to activate "Her" XP installation on "Your" computer...you can't do that...that would be a violation of MS's EULA.

If she is not online than you MUST call to activate.

The easiest thing to do is use a voice telephone and call the number for your region. There are only 2 ways to activate XP - online or by phone. You have to do it by phone if that copy of XP was most recently activated less than 120 days prior.

Yes, reformatting gets you 30 days. If she does not have a phone or go online, she will be reformatting every 30 days unless you bring a cell phone over to her so she can call the activation number.

If your only problem is getting the ADSL line to connect, go into the Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab>Click on never dial a connection>Apply. Then Click on LAN Settings>check the bos to Automatically detect settings.

When you're finished with the Activation (and I'd recommend doing the windows updates while on dsl), go back to Internet Options and change the connection option back to Always Dial my default connection.

If you have the computer at your place and you have a telephone, just call to activate. It's pretty painless.

Yes. It's an automated system. Very easy and no wait usually.

i dont know if a re-activation is the same , because since i purchased my XP Disk i called 2 or 3 times to re-activate it because of reformat or hardware changes ... each time it was a real person .. not an automated system

Everytime I reinstalled Windows, I could just give it like a 10 set number and the automated operator would give an activation number. I did have to speak to someone once because of a hardware change, but I've reinstalled Windows about a half dozen dozen times without talking to a person.

I've had to talk to someone every time I've reactivated.

When you call the 800 number, it asks you to enter the number it gives on the Phone Activation screen. When you enter it through the automated system, does it say that it could not validate it and THEN you have to talk to someone?

that's exactly what I get. It did that before when I had a hardware change, but the last time I reactivated there was no hardware change.

Yes. Ever since I did a minor hardware change, it asks for me to talk to a rep. Although I registered my version last time before I activated and it activated through the internet. I don't know about next time though.
