Unhappy Software Error

I was using my comp yesterday, went out of room when i came back in i had no icons or start button on my desktop ended up having to turn comp off when i restarted it i got this error message.

" windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as load DLL for kernel"

A friend suggested i use the installation disc to reload win xp so tried that but when i and pressed enter to continue it did nothing.

Is there anything else i can try.

Your friend wanted you to repair the XP install and he was right.
So first, is that a restore cd (special for use with a pre-built computer) or a regular XP cd?

You choose install - then it should find the existing copy and repair will be an option. If it just sits there, you have a hardware issue that needs to be solved.

Is this a name brand computer (Dell, eMachines, Gateway, HP, Compaq, etc.) or is it a custom/generic build? If name brand, the model number would help, if custom, do you have any documentation?

The tower has a Dan label so does the psu apart from that i can't tell you as i think the bloke i got it from might have made it up from different computers although i'm not sure.
I was wondering if the hard drive that contains the windows program might have packed in and if it would be worth trying another hard drive in there as everything else seems to work apart from the windows.
When i got the comp my partner added a second hard drive as the one with windows on it wasn't big enough to store the music files etc.

Okay, lets see if we're on the same page.
Your cd-rom was first in the boot order (you checked in the bios to be sure of that) but the HDD didn't respond.
You don't know who the drive manufacturer is so you haven't run a diagnostic?
The last is important since most manufacturer's will demand the diagnostic results before they replace the drive, if it's still under warranty.
There's nothing on that drive that you want to keep?
Have I got all that right?
