How do I get the MSN messenger icon out of my tray?
I'd actually like to get rid of it all together, but I'll settle for not having run on startup.

You can rt click the icon and go to preferences tab and unselect startup with windows. Also if you have at least service pack 1 installed you can go to add/remove programs in control panel and select add/remove windows components. Then unselect it from the list there. If you dont have sp1 or sp2 installed there is a workaround to make it show up in the list and then can be removed normally. Here is a tutorial to remove it and some other annoyances.

In any XP version you can exit messenger then explore the C drive, program files folder and delete the folder that says messenger. If it won't allow you to delete it, boot into safe mode and follow the above instructions.

Go to the options in messenger and uncheck the box to start the program when Windows boots.

That will work, but I believe he said he wanted to eliminate it entirely.

If he follows the tutorial it will be gotten rid of entirely. It is a pain if sp1 or 2 is not installed but with them the option to uninstall is right in the add/remove programs applet in control panel.

There is a difference between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. Windows Messenger comes in Windows. MSN Messenger must be installed manually.
If it really is MSN Messenger and you do not want it at all you can simply go to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.
