Remote Assistance

Hi

Having problems trying to connect via remote assistance to a friends PC that i built two months ago. I took off Norton Security cause i thought that was the problem but i still can not connect. The PC is running WinXP Home with windows firewall enabled and avast antivirus. I receive the assistance message ok and type in the relevent password but it will not connect. Do ISP's now block this traffic?

She is on standard dialup.

Send a message via MSN to doctorgonzo
Disable the firewall first to see if that makes a difference.

Instead of using remote assistance, try a logmein.com free account.

Hi doctorgonzo
My first thought was to temporarily disable the firewall so i'll give that a go tomorrow thanks.

GLC thanks for the tip, looked at the site and will try that if the disable firewall does not work.

I'm just trying to save myself unnecessary journeys as it becomes tiresome after a while. Built the system for my wife's friend and she calls me just about every other day about some problem or other (mostly user error).

Remote operation over dialup can be frustrating though - screen redraws will take forever.

Take your point, using VNC at work to customers PC's at ISDN sites is frustrating enough, constantly having to refresh screen. I'll try and persuade her to go broadband.

dougl, what was the answer? did dropping the firewall help? did you try the logme in free? is that program a suitable substitute when you're helping others undo an error or problem?

Hi Pb3

Went to the site GLC recommended but they dont advise trying it over dialup connection so unfortunately i have to pay a visit each time she gets stuck. luckily i've persuaded her to take the ECDL so at least she will know the basics after that. The PC is working ok i know its mainly down to user error. I know there is other remote software out there but on dialup it would probably just timeout.
