Active Directory and Roaming Profiles

I've been testing out Server 2003 a little, and set up active directory. I've also tried setting up roaming profiles so the users files can be accessed from multiple computers.

The only problem is that when the user saves something it saves it to the server, but it also saves a copy on the local computer. Is there any way to stop this so it only saves it to the server and not the local computer.

Is there any script that I could run that will delete all profiles except the local users, or is there an easier way to do it.

Is that something that has to be set on the local computer or the server? I'd like something that can be set from the server.

I tried setting it on both the server and the local computer through gpedit.msc, but neither seemed to delete the profile. Is there something that I'm missing?

Thanks again

Reading this makes me believe it should be applied on the server, like most group policies.

Edit: It keeps talking about slow link detection, maybe if you disable that policy as well it may work. The policy should be in the same folder, user profiles.

I tried it again with a totally new user, but the profile is still there.

It should delete as soon as the user logs off, right?

I just noticed that on the webpage, it says applies to Server 2000. Is there a chance it wouldn't work on 2003?

In AD are you setting the users profile path and sharing it out with appropriate permissions?
i setup school admin servers running 2003 and having created the users data area G drive (Server E partition) with shares and permissions I set this in the users profile path. Creating a g drive which resides in their own data area allows them to only save data in this area. Their profile is cached to the local workstation when they logon but their documents are saved to their G drive. There are some settings in group Policy to set up users data area i.e. users home directory etc. have you thought about mandatory profiles?

I think I'm using the right setting. The only difference from Server 2000 is that the policy is under User Profiles and not Logon.

To set up the roaming profiles, I created a shared folder called profiles. Then in the User Properties I set the Profile Path to \\servername\profiles\%username%. Is that the correct way to do it. That's what I read from the Microsoft support website.

Hi

I have a folder on the e partition called users, this is not shared out but users have read access. Within that i have individual user folders. On the sharing tab these are shared out by the username i.e. Dave. Within the shared tab i click on permissions and set it to full control. Within AD i set the users profile path to \\servername\Dave\profile with the g drive set to \\servername\Dave. On the security tab for the folder i remove the users and add in the individual user ie Dave and give him modify access. Within the Dave folder AD will create a profile folder once the user logs on. It may not be the perfect setup but it works for me and the users are able to access their documents from thier G drive. i then setup Word etc modifying the file save location to the users G drive.
