Windows wont start fully

when i start up windows, the logo screen comes up and the little bar starts going accross
but wont start up ,it then goes to the black screen and asks if i would like to start in safe mode,or last good config etc .It wont start properly if i choose last known good config, but will start in safe mode, how do i get it to start up normally.
I have even tried to reload windows to use the repair facility but cant use it .if i try to reload windows completely it wont let me as it says that the version of windows i have is newer than the source disk.I dont use system restore
my os is xp pro
If no one can with this problem ,how do i go about wiping windows clean and starting again without having to buy a new hard drive to start clean
please help

Try unpluging everything from USB as first step, and then let windows to try load it's self, if problem presist you may have some other hardware failure( like memory, etc).
To wipe out hdd clean download utility from HDD manufacturers web site and with it you can do diagnostic and reformat as well!!!

What kind of computer is this? Home built or name brand?

What are the complete system specs? List the parts by brand and model if you know them.

Is this a new computer or an existing one?

Are you using a upgrade CD instead of a full installation one?

To wipe the hard drive you can use a zero-fill utility like Darik's Boot And Nuke or KillDisk. These utilities will write zeros to the entire hard drive putting it in a "like new" state so you can do a fresh install to it.

Part of the issue with the repair install could be that you have installed service packs since the time you got the machine.
Is that a brand name or a machine that you built.
Your options are different on each.
If it is a brand name, wiping the drive might destroy the hidden restore partition, and then you would have to buy a new OS.
