Numerous Problems
I've been having numerous problems with this system over the past month. I've tried virus scans and other scans many times, bringing up nothing.
What happens is, if the computer has been in use for a while, lets say 30 min+, if I try to shut the system down, usually because it's not working properly, the system will freeze, requiring me to hit the reset button if I ever wish to use the system again. However, on reboot, nearly all settings are wiped out (Zonealarm, Firefox, Firefox's cache, etc.). Can someone help me out here? EDIT: I should add that once in a while, even if I have pages loading (in Firefox), my internet connection will stop completely, and then disconnect. Last edited by Kulag; 02-20-2006 at 06:09 AM. |

Please post the complete system specs of this computer. Tell us if it's a home built or name brand computer and list the parts by brand and model if you know them. Also which operating system you're using and any background programs running on the system.
Do you remember what you were doing with the computer prior to this problem showing up? Cricket

MoBo: Asus K8V-X
Chipset: VIA VT8383/5 Apollo K8T800(M), AMD Hammer (2 CPU) CPU: AMD64 2800+ Memory: Crucial CT6464Z40B (512MB DDR) * 1 module Video: ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP, 128MB) Case/Power: Antec SLK1650B OS: WinXP Pro SP2 If you need more, let me know. The system was built by a small retailer in Ottawa called DealsDirect. I have another computer built by them that I've had very little trouble with (in other words, it's all my fault) but this one hasn't ceased to have problems since my parents bought it last year. Background stuff (other than OS): HMailServer UltraVNC ATI Drivers ZoneAlarm MS Antispyware Java Update Scheduler Avast! Anti-virus Internet Information Services MySQL CachemanXP Diskeeper GAIM AnalogX Proxy Internet Download Manager Desktop Sidebar Weather Watcher The problem hasn't "shown up", it's always been there in one form or another, sometimes better, sometimes worse. Usually it'll be like exchanging one problem for another. eg, at one time, the comp took a full minute to disconnect from the internet, it stopped doing that recently, instead, it now won't let Firefox shut down properly... With the long list of contiued (yet changing) problems I would suspect a hardware issue first. My first inclination would be to download memtest and check the RAM.
I had a system with similar issues that turned out to be a defective motherboard, though the problems with this one remained constant, not ever-changing. -Kev

I have memtest, so I'll run that. I've been suspecting a faulty motherboard or CPU, since the RAM that's in there now (Crucial) is a replacement, which was purchased because the system was not functioning properly. The original was OEM. I'll report back After I've run memtest.

Well, I ran memtest for about 6 hours yesterday (23.5 passes) with no errors. What's next?
