Program "xxx.xxx" has a problem and needs to close

Hi everyone,
Been trying to figure this problem out for a while. I have an HP ZE2315 notbook and recently upgraded the ram to 1 gig from 512. A short while after that i started getting errors stating "IExplorer" (or whatever program i am using at the time) has encountered an error and needs to close. Also every once in a while i would get BSOD IRQ_less_than_or_equal_to. So i automatically assume Bad Ram. I run MEMtest 8 hours, 23 passes and come up with NO errors. Still suspicious, I put the old memory back in and get the same problems. I defragged, ran avg, norton, spybot, adware. Still have the problem. I totally format the notebook. Get everything installed again. Same problem. I tried firefox and get the same thing. Its really annoying about every 10-15 mins i get the error and about every two hours i get bsod. Its almost always this code: 0xc0000005. Anyone have any other ideas i could try?

If you say it works fine without it then I think you may have solved your own problem.

I read that wrong. Sorry. Putting the old memory back in you receive the same problems. Must be some other hardware component then.

Edit: Yeah, for now

Edit2: If you have nothing else to try, may I suggest trying a different HD? (and let us hope it isn't a psu problem).

southrk - have you tried running things in Safe Mode for an extended period of time? If it's a bad memory module (or other hardware failure), then eventually you should have trouble there too.

If it does seem to be hardware - check in the Bios to make sure the timings haven't slipped out-of-whack (weak battery or power surges can do this).

If no trouble in Safe Mode, then it is true that various blends of software & drivers can cause the 0xc0000005 errors ("unhandled exceptions"). When you reinstalled, did you also reinstall the latest Service Packs & patches? Did you reinstall from an HP Recovery partition? Or a clean reinstall from a standard retail XP CD? If yes to that, did you use the latest chipset drivers for the motherboard?

That should be enough questions for now - since I'm about to fall asleep. Hope it's fixed by morning!

[ Can't hurt to run a diagnostic on the hard drive, just like Dragon suggested ]

[late Edit -- (still awake!) OK, something was echoing in my aging brain - I do remember reading a bit about the DEP settings & 0xc0000005 errors. It's a lengthy read, but all the details are here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2mempr.mspx -- you could try things with DEP set to OFF & then re-enable it to test.]

Didnt think about running it in safe mode, will try that tonight along with the hd diagnostic. I cant really do anything with the bios, its very limited (only security settings and date/time settings are available). As for the hard drive, I deleted all the partitions, zeroed it out and reinstalled from the HP dvd that includes all the drivers and SP2. I then windows updated everything. I got to the dep settings but there is no option to turn it off, the 2 options are dep everything except what i include in the list or let windows choose whats deped.

Thanks for the help again!
