XP Won't Boot
Starts loading, bars cycle about 2 to 3 times, then black screen, no curser, error message, etc. Keyboard also seems to shutdown, numlock indicator turns off and no response from any keys. Have to hold power button to shut down.
Accessed safe mode with F8. "last known good conf." gives same response. "safe without network" and command prompt options seem to begin loading drivers till screen almost full, then screen freezes with keyboard shutdown. Running XP home on an E-machines T2898. Now, as for how I probably broke it......... Used WinPatrol to edit some services. Changed several items from auto to manual but pretty sure I didn't dissable anything, thou I likely did stop a couple items. Most were network services that I felt were uneeded fulltime as I only run one machine direct thru modem to DSL, no router or other computers. Second, and even dumber, mistake was not to take notes of my changes. Discovered problem later when I tried to reboot into safe mode to remove Norton and install Avast. The restore disc provided by E-machines only offers two options; full reformatt/reinstall and command prompt from CD. Live CD of Ubuntu runs fine, possible to use it for rescue or maybe install Ubuntu onto hard drive w/dual boot. Have previously done this on the computer I'm using now, was easier then I thought. Besides the above idiocy I've also only got about half my data backed up on CD's and non of my settings (firefox, etc.) so any help provided would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance....... |

Will it run XP in safe mode at all? Have you tried system restore to a time before the problem started?

Afraid not, safe mode menu will load by using F8 during power up but when either safe mode or command prompt is selected the screen begins filling from the top with what I believe are the drivers and possibly some other files that I assume are part of the normal system loading proccess. As the screen gets to app. 90% things simply stop.
The display freezes on the list, no curser, error message, etc. and the keyboard shuts down. The only thing I can make function at this point is "power off" by holding, not just pressing, the power button. The case has no reset button, or even an on/off switch on the PSU. I repeated this frustrating procedure, and also "last known good conf." along with normal start attempts at least a dozen times before giving up out of concern for the machines(and my foot's) physical safety. Also revived frustration the following a.m. Haven't retried in a couple days now as I'm obviuosly in need of more experienced help. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed. If there's any other info needed let me know and I'll do my best. Thanks |

The recovery CD should have a repair option. Select to install XP and then after the setup files are loaded there should be a second options screen with a selection to repair this installation of XP.

Guess I should state that this machine isn't used for business, etc. so I can take my time on this project rather then try for an "emergency" data saving type operation. |

The eMachines recovery CD is not a standard XP CD - it's built with Ghost. There is no repair install option. You can *try* using the command prompt and running chkdsk /p.
Rescue your files and get a fresh start. |

Have been doing some research on using Linux to rescue files. I have a live CD and have already performed a successful dual boot install on the machine I'm using to write this. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help and advice. Guess I've gotta remember to do my homework and stay awake while "tweaking" |

Easiest way to rescue files is slave the drive into another computer.

You mean physically remove and then install in second box, right?
Without being able to boot system, I don't see how I could do it with a network connection. |

That is correct. Physically remove and install as a second drive.

Thanks. I was pretty sure that's what you meant. Guess it's time to get a screwdriver and clear some workspace.
Thanks again to all for the help and advice |
