Do you only have one HD in your system? Usually, "D" and "E" are assigned to the optical drives, when "C" is assigned to your HD. What OS are you using?

Right click on My Computer, select Manage. Open Device Manager, are any devices shown with a red X or a ! in a yellow circle? Specifically, look at IDE/ATAPI Controllers and CD/DVD-ROM Drives. If any are red X'd, right click and select Enable Device. If any are !'d, double click and read the issue and post exactly what it says in the Device Status window.

D And E

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Did you log in as the administrator? If you have XP home, you have to start in safe mode to do this.
