Windows XP Issue
I just built a new computer, with a new HDD. I am using my Dell HDD from my old one as a second HDD, with Windows XP already installed. The old Dell is scraped. I have the Dell Windows reinstall disc. Is there any way to legally install Windows on the new drive from the Dell disc? It will be on the same machine, but if it's on 2 HDD's is that illegal? And if I did it that way, would it require activation, and would Microsoft activate it under these circumstances (still just one machine)?
Or maybe I don't have to? If Windows is on one HDD, do I need it on the other? Or am I going to have to by a second copy of Windows? Last edited by attybo; 03-01-2006 at 12:01 PM. |

You're going to have to buy a new copy of Windows. The Dell CD can only be used to restore Windows on a Dell computer. It can't be used on your new build.

An OEM copy of Windows XP Home runs about $90 at www.newegg.com

You can buy an OEM copy of Windows and use it, no problem.

It just means that it doesnt come with any of the fancy packaging and documentation. In an OEM version, you get the Windows CD, CD key, and the Intruction booklet.
