explorer error message

I have an older computer running WIN98 and I when start the machine up, I get the message "this program has preformed an illigal operation and will be shut down." EXPLORER has caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 0167:00401f31. The same thing happens when I try safe mode. It starts to boot and only gets to the background on my monitor. I cann't access any programs or files. Any idea's.

I have had experiences where page faults at 0000:xxxxx turned out to be a bad mobo. That address seems to be in higher memory. I have no guarantees, but I would start by examining your memory.
