DirectX Error

OKay, now this is the first time I have had this error before. Everytime I play a game like Call of Duty 2 for example, if I minimize (Alt+Tab) the game, that will be the last time I see a game until I reboot my computer. Upon restoring the window, my screen goes black like normal but then I get an error that says DirectX has encountered an error. From there I have to restart before anything that has to do with a Resolution change. A 2nd example would be with LOTR: The Battle for Middle Earth. I can play it for all of eternity, but the second that I quit, my desktop keeps the game menu resolution (1024x768) and not my normal resolution (1280x1024). If I try to change my resolution back to normal, my screen goes dark and then comes back up unchanged with a box that says that I need to restart for the changes to take effect. All games fail to load because they try and change the resolution for their intro videos and what not.

I ran dxdiag (after the game crash and without rebooting) and everything is fine except the tests. When I run the DirectDraw test it passes the first two tests, but fails the test that requires the resolution to change saying that my computer may not support 640x480 ("DirectDraw test results: Failure at step 17 (SetDisplayMode to 640x480x16): HRESULT = 0x80004001 (Not implemented)").

When I test Direct3D it fails all the test as they all require a resolution change.

I hope there is an easy way to solve this problem because I absolutely HATE reinstalling windows.

Uninstall your video driver, clean up with Driver Cleaner, reinstall the latest video driver available (best place to get it is from the video chipset manufacturer - ATI, Nvidia, SiS, etc. - not necessarily the card manufacturer), then reinstall DirectX using the full redistributable.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I will try what you suggested.

One other note I just tried, I get 1 screen resize and only 1 resize before I need to reboot to change it anymore.
