Is MS Dumping OEM and Upgrades?
Anyone having trouble with Windows Updates? I’m getting failures on "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)". Happens on 3 of four 4 machines. All four are valid, genuine versions of WinXP Home Edition and have been running Windows Updates for months on end.
On the 3 failures, two are my builds running fully verified OEM versions and the third is an old Dell 4100 which was upgraded from WinMe two or three years ago!!! The Error Code shown is 0x80070005 and the message states Installation Failure, Try to install the update again, or request help etc… Is ‘ole Microsoft try to tell us something!!!!

Statica,
All three MS products were acquired from Newegg, new and ready to go. They have previously passed all the MS validation. This isn't pirated software. I know the difference!!!!! |

Redo40,
Thanks for the post. This afternoon I was doing some maint on my wife's PC and decided to run Windows Update. She doesn't always do that very well. This new validation tool was downloaded suppose to run and failed. I then tried on the other PC's. The results on three of four were all the same. I have looked through the Know. Base and stuff until my eyes are numb. Could you try a Windows Update and now and see what happens! |

I didnt say that they were pirated, I merely gave you a link to check to see if you might be affected by Microsoft's new internet activation policy.
There are other sources you could try like: http://groups.google.ca/group/micros...58a76314510653 or http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=908440 (though it doesnt deal with your error, worthwhile to check your firewall settings) |

Statica,
As promised, I have an answer for the problem I was experiencing yesterday. After working all day on it, this is the short answer. MS issued an update through Windows Update back in mid February that caused problems with the validation recognition on certain systems. As best I can determine by reading between the lines, those systems are OEM and some upgrades. The problem caused Windows Update the attempt to run a validation control that failed during installation. At that point all Windows Updates will cease. A lot of those of us who build using OEM versions of Windows XP are bound to have this problem. At any rate, this is a link to either download/run or run an Active X control that will scan and repair the problem. It also provides a narrative that can be copied/pasted and saved for future reference. It works great! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 Hope this helps someone else who has the problem |

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I somehow missed the post. Anyway, I did an update, the genuine validation tool was the only update, without a problem. This may be a problem for me in the future, but as of now, all my computers are updating fine.

The way I read the article Microsoft is going to include small computer builders next Quarter (When is that?) but in the meantime if you do have a problem activating Windows the best solution would to give them a call to get it activated.

The gist of the talk in the MS newsgroup suggested this was an honest mistake in the Windows Updates. While there were a lot of us affected, I would have thought there should have been more. In the end it seems that MS should have better things to do than chase software they have already determined as valid in the first place. Initial validations may be another matter!!
