Have to fix the boot record on Win XP every once in a while

I've been having a very odd problem with my desktop which runs with Win XP pro SP2. I use it normally and sht it down normally but then, sometimes (2 times already to be precise), when I turn it on I get a message that says something like "File missing. C:\windows\system32\config. Please use your windows set up disk and press R to repair the windows installation". So I do that, use the disk, go into repair mode and use "fixboot" to fix the windows boot record. Then it starts up normally but upon restart it says that it has found new hardware for which it finds no drivers.

As I previously said, it's already happened 2 times. I've lready checked for virus and nothing. I have a hunch it has something to do with the starforce drivers that came wih race driver 3. But I have no idea.

Any help?

You may want to do a repair reinstall of XP and get a fresh start with your hardware enumeration. You will need a XP CD with SP2 already incorporated, if yours isn't, you can slipstream one. Disconnect all peripherals and USB devices when you do this.
