Unchecking startup items

In Msconfig under startup can unchecking anything possibly make it so your computer can't boot or could I uncheck everything (other than what I KNOW I want) and be perfectly safe.

Thanks,
Graeme

I only have two items checked. The AVG program and the Microsoft Antispyware program. Not sure if this helps or not, but I would assume I could also uncheck those two programs without having any problems. Running XP Pro. I believe if you are running other OS's such as Windows 98,
you may NEED a few items checked. Wait for more responses, before you do anything. Just my two cents.

You should check them on that site. Some are recommended to be left alone, as they are not threats, and contribute to the safety (AV and Firewalls) or stability of your system.

It is also good when trying to detect spyware and malware running on a PC. I use it quite often when I am looking over HJT logs and often check over my various PCs start up lists after installing new software to see if any junk has been added which isn't needed. Removing unnecessary start up items can also speed up boot times slightly too.

i talked to dell on the phone a while back, and they told me to click the services tab, click "hide all microsoft services" and then click disable all. Also under startup, you can click disable all with no problems. I do this all the time and it really helps

If you uncheck too much, no big deal, just start it in safe mode and fix it.
