My friends computer stopped loading up, windows 95, I did a clean install of windows XP an upon reboot I am getting the error:
Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) What's does this mean, the install went perfectly (until reboot). How can this be fixed?

I think the problem is in my boot ini file, how can I completely change the boot ini by using DOS? The only way I can get into Dos is by using the Recovery option when I boot from the XP disk upon startup.
I believe this is the right boot ini file: [boot loader] timeout=5 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=" Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition " /fastdetect But I don't know how to properly set this up using DOS! I have tried: C:\Windows>bootcfg /rebuild this gives me 1 install and I add it to the boot list, then it asks for a LOAD IDENTIFIER: ?? What do I put here? And then it asks me to enter load options:?? I have gone through this several times and now have 6 boot configurations in my boot list but none seem to work! And how do I delete them. Please HELP!!! Friend took over!
After extensive research and no luck my friend has decided to take matters into his own hands (again)??? Most of the problem is that he keeps making uninformed and foolish changes against my advice. I really don't like trying to fix his mistakes after he mangles the system. He has gone through at least 4 older computers that WERE working when he got them, but had minor problems, and after his fixes none of them are working and are in the trash. I would still like to know what the solution was? He had changed the hard drive, but since XP took on the initial install until it rebooted I thought the hard drive was OK. who knows, now he has switched the hard drive again and now says it doesn't work! Who knows what he did, I just don't want the headache! Thanks for the interest.

That wasn't the answer I hoped for.
Your best bet with a friend like that is to leave him to it, nothing else works. |

That's what I figured also, I may never figure out the solution now but I do enjoy the challenge, thanks for the interest.
