Odd problem installing XP…
I was looking at a friend’s computer, when starting up it would show the windows loading screen for a bit then blue screen and I believe it said “un-mountable boot device”. So I check out the hard drive, it was jumpered cable select, I changed it to single/master for the hell of it. And then I went to try a clean install of windows, I wiped out the partition and I did a quick format and after that it hung and said it could not create a folder in system32 called mui and that setup could not continue until the folder was created. Well I restarted and did a full format instead of quick and it stayed at 0% for like 5 minutes, it’s a 200 GB hard drive, it should take a while but not 5 minutes for reach 1%. I told him to call me if/when it made progress or was done. Anyone know what the issue could be here? I am guessing that the hard drive has serious issues and may need to be replaced, because apparently it can’t even create a folder on the thing. Anything else to look for? I have never seen this issue before...

I am actually dealing with this same problem and had piosted a tread about it. It seems like the hard drive is bad. Fortunately mine is a dell and under warranty. I had to jump thru all the rings in their circus, but they agreed that it means that the HD needs to be replaced
hope it helps, Roaming_builder |

I actually got it working, it completed the full format with no issue and then XP installed fine with no issue. I got all the drivers installed and a few programs and it seems to be running great.

I would still run manufacturer's diags on the hard drive to make sure it's healthy.
