change login name
i recently set up a new computer in my lab.
it came preinstalled with XP home and registered to "Electrical & Computer". i have set up two (and only) administrator accounts. when the computer boots up, the logon screen displays the name "electrical" instead of my name. i can use my password to logon and i can also type in my name and password and logon but as soon as i lock the screen or log off it says "electrical" again. how can i change that?

Download PowerToys for XP and run. In the login dialog box you can make your changes.

thanks but i was hoping for a solution that does not require a third party app.
i'd like to be able to change the XP setting myself. |

hmmm. i dont think it is possible. unless you run regedit and find the registry key that does that.
but it is quite a lot of trouble to do that. |

Power Toys is a free utility from MS and has many other useful tweaks. Well worth the install.

How Do I Change The Registered Owner Name In Windows XP
Sometimes when you purchase a PC that comes with XP pre-installed the actually copy of XP (usually on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copy) may be registered to the company that build the PC. To change the registration details do the following. NOTE Before proceeding to edit the Registry be sure to make a backup copy. This can be achieved by using a third party software. 1/ Click the Start Button 2/ From the Start menu click Run 3/ In the Run dialog box type: regedit 4/ The Registry editor will now open 5/ Navigate to the following key: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version 6/ Once you have reached the Current Version key take a look in the Right Hand Pane and look for 'Registered Owner' 7/ Right click the Registered Owner key to edit it 8/ To edit the key Right click the entry and select Modify 9/ At the same time you might also like to change the Registered organisation. This option is situated just above the registered owner option. 10/ To edit the key Right Click the entry and select Modify Last edited by macko72; 03-24-2006 at 04:47 AM. |

changing the registered owner in the registry indeed changed the owner (now it's the lab instead of the computer department).
however the original issue remains, when the computer boots, it displays the name "Electrical" instead of my account name. i can still log on with my password but i want my name displayed so no visitor even attempts to sit at my desk and touch my computer. |

You can change a user account name in Control Panel>User Accounts but be aware that it's a cosmetic change only. The new name is what will show during boot and on the Start Menu but back in the file structure the original name will still be used.

What I've always done in this sort of situation is created a new account, transferred all my files over, and then deleted the old one.
