Passwords??

This may not seem like a big deal to most of you, but, it is with me, cause I'm getting HOLY HECK from the missus!! My problem is this: you go to a secure site and it of course asks for your ID and Password. Windows then asks "would you like me to remember your ID and password?" You click yes and it then remembers it everytime you go back. But, not with mine. There are some old ID and passwords associated with one of the websites I go to that are now invalid, but I can't get it to remember the new ones. Is there a specific place on my PC that they are stored? and, if so, how can I get to them and change things? Any and all HELP! will be appreciated. thorlo6

First of all, open Internet Explorer, got to tools, internet options, then clear browser history, delete temporary Internet files and delete cookies.

You can also explore C drive, documents and settings, user name, cookies, then delete everything in the folder but the index file.

Small problem Kev. I'm not running IE. I'm running MSN Explorer. It has always been a pain in the nether regions( ) to get MSN explorer to do anything right. I'll try it and let you know something. thorlo6

I'm not familiar with MSN Explorer, but try this in IE:

Tools...Internet Options...Content tab...Auto Complete button...Clear Passwords.

Yeah, I never use MSN explorer (heard too many customer nightmares with it) but I would think there must be a cache in there somewhere that can be cleared. The only way any browser recognises old passwords is through cookies.

Not true. IE stores passwords in a secure location that can't be accessed by users like cookies. Storing them as cookies is a huge security hole: anybody could open the cookies and see the passwords in plain text.

OK, DOC, I stand corrected. What I meant was, clearing browser cache usually relieves the customer of this probelm, so they can enter a new password at the site and not have to deal with the website constantly using the old one.

This is the way I have always cleared them for customers using IE.

Isn't there a .pwl file somewhere in XP where you can access passwords as in old WIN 98?

If the issue is merely that the website itself won't allow you to login as somebody else, then clearing the cookies will solve that problem, sure. But this problem is that the AutoComplete feature for passwords is not letting the user store new passwords, and that's a function of Windows/IE.

This utility might help. I've never used it, though.

Well, clearing passwords in IE defintely does not affect MSN Explorer. At least
we tried. Oh by the way Kev, I don't know what horror stories you've heard, but I've been using MSN as my ISP since I got my first PC in y2k and have never had that much of a problem. MSN Explorer hasn't caused me any problems until now, and it is more frustrating than anything else. thorlo6
