re-installing XP without original CD

I have an old HP that i am trying to fix for my brother. It is so infected with viruses spyware and hijacking crap, that i want to just start from scratch. I have an OEM copy of WinXP Home SP2 that i bought for my recent build. I was wondering if i could use that magic jellybean program thing to get the serial code of the HP and use my OEM CD to reinstall the OS. There is no data or important programs on that computer that needs to be saved.

The only problem i forsee is that the computer came with SP1 originally, will it matter if I use a CD that has SP2 on it???

That OEM cd will almost certainly not accept the code from HP. The XP version they install is not the same as the "OEM" version you have and uses different keys. At least, I've tried this about five times in the past and it never worked. Isn't there some (hidden) partition on the hard drive with restore files ?

I have an OEM version of both SP1 and SP2 for Windows XP, and I have used both on my HP Pavilion without any troubles at all. In fact, after it arrived, I pulled out the harddrive before I even turned it on. Didn't want any of that bundled garbage, and computer was pretty much free after buying a PSC 2355 and a flat panel monitor.

I don't think you would have any trouble, at least give it a try.

The harddrive SHOULD have a restore partition it, but if you can't find it, contact them and they will mail you like 6 or 7 cd's that will help you restore the computer to factory settings.

If you tell me the exact model I can steer you in the right direction, but this should get you started. 800-HP invent or 800-474-6836http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact_us.html

What? NOoooooo. Be sure to use the XP Key that came with the HP. Check it first for a hidden partition. See if you can press DEL or F8 and boot into the restore partition. Excatly what make and model is it.

Just contact HP and get the restore cd's if you're worried about it. They usually only charge shipping, and sometimes provide that as well.

Ok, when he brings it to you, check for a restore partition. If you can't find one, use your disc with his key. If that won't work, call 800 HP invent.
