Cant reinstall 2000 or get it to boot
Computer had stop errors , booted with CD to try and do a repair , computer stops at" looking for other Windows installation". Tried to do a reinstall stops at same point. I don't have a emergency repair disk. I'm concerned it may be a virus and not willing to pull hard drive and connect it to another computer and possibly infect it also. Would my anti virus protect computer #2 from infection ? If so would I be correct in pulling hard drive and connecting it to computer #2 and then deleting or renaming Windows installation. Then reinstalling it into #1 and attempting to reinstall Windows 2000 .
TIA James PS no longer get the stop error messages |

Are you getting any "int xx" errors? What kind of errors are being shown?
I have had the experience where memory goes bad and installing any OS is an exercise in futility. try testing your memory with memtest86. If a virus is suspected, and you are not making any attempt at rescuing files, use a zero fill utility like deriks boot and nuke or killdisk. Fdisk the drive to setup your partition(s), making sure the first partition is set to "active" and do a fdisk /mbr. Format the drive(s) and this should let you reinstall windows. If it does not, and your memory checks out, test your disk and mobo. |

I'm getting no error messages now , it just stops functioning. And yes I am trying to save files. Son has all of his writing on it since he was 13, some of it is backed up , but not all.

If you are running antivirus in computer #2, scan files to be saved before retrieving them.
Usually, this will be an option in the menu from a right click. I would install the drive (jumpered as slave) in another computer and burn all files to disk, or save to an external hard drive (even better). -Kev

Here is what I've done . pulled Hard drive and put it into my external case. Ran a full scan with AVG , nothing found , ran a scan with Ad Aware 30 some entries removed them all , Ran a scan with Spybot search and destroy 60 some entries found ,removed all of them. Did a disk check for errors none found , defragged the disk . Then renamed WINNT file to WINNT.old and put it back into computer, was able to reinstall win 2000. Now if I create a rescue disk and then rename WINNT.old to WINNT and the new WINNT to another name . Will the rescue disk fix the MBR? I have backed up all the files I could find to another disk , but unsure if I have all of them and would like to avoid reformatting the hard drive.
