Drivers For Sound Again
Dear all,
I have a NEC computer P4 20GB HDD with 96 MB RAM and 1.4GB processor. It came with a windows 2000 OS but i later upgraded it to XP. Later on i decided to upgrade from Office 2000 to Office 2003. Since then the sound has gone off. I have tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail. The drivers indicate they can be installed only under any OS below XP.Despite reverting to windows 2000 the drivers do not reinstall I m perplexed.

Your pretty light on ram. 2000 works good at 256mg and XP likes at least 512megs of ram. Also, check the HD for space left on the drive, if less than a gig something may not load or install.

96Mb is a bit low for 2000, but I don't see how it could cause the sound card driver problem. Windows 2000 drivers also are usually compatible with XP, but even in the rare case they aren't, the manufacturer of the card (or the motherboard manufacturer if it's integrated sound) should have special drivers for XP. First if all, what is the exact brand/model of your soundcard ? And did the sound stop working immediately after installing Office 2003, or is it unrelated ? Also if possible provide a link to the driver you tried...

Yes Mesaeus,
The sound went out immediately I upgraded to Office 2003. It is actually integrated sound and the card is a SounbLaster model. I still have 17GB of HHD space left so I do not understand |

Are you trying to reinstall the drivers using the program on the driver CD or thru Device Manager?
I had a similar problem trying to install an HP printer. The printer was previously install on Windows 2000. When I got a new computer with WinXP Home, I tried to install the printer using the CD-ROM that came with the printer and I got the same message you did. I had to open device manager to install the drivers manually. -

The device manager did not help. Apparently it doen't find the drivers on the driver instALLATION cd. The CD is ok and I'm confused

Did you try Mesaeus suggestion?
If not, try going to the manufacturer's website to see if they have an updated driver for XP available for download. |
