XP system restore not working
I have installed a new (2nd hand) hard drive in one of my computers and installed xp pro.I disconnected the old drive and installed xp on the new drive configured as primary master. I then connected the old drive as primary slave and all seemed well. The old drive still has Windows Millenium Edition installed.
the only problem I have is the system restore feature in xp. It simply isnt working, I get the box comeup on screen telling me to select a restore point and tells me that there is no restore point created for this day. So I click the next button to go to the callandar to select another restore point but nothing happens, the callandar doesnt come up. Same thing happens when I try to create a new restore point, nothing happens when I click to create a new one. Would having ME still installed on the old drive be causing this or is there some other problem, the restore feature in ME never did work. I didnt install the patch for it to work. I intend to format the old drive as soon as I transfer all my files to the new drive. Should I get rid of ME on the old drive now. can I just delete the windows me files or is there a way to uninstall the program from the old drive. Is there some other reason that may be causing this to happen.

Ok, I've had the problem before. Chances are you made one restore point and now you're trying to make a retore point that was at an earlier date than the first restore point which you can't do. Although i don't think i quite understand what you meant by the way you wrote your thread sothis may not apply to you.

Sorry grocker if I didnt make it very clear.
to put it simply, I disconnected my old drive with ME installed and connected a new drive and installed xp on that. I then reconnected the old drive, making it primary slave. I cant create a restore point and cant restore to an earlier restore point because there just isnt any restore points for me to restore to. |

Check that system restore is enabled and active.
Verify System Restore is enabled: Verify System Restore is turned on, using the steps below: Click Start, and then right-click My Computer. Click Properties and then click the System Restore tab. Verify Turn off System Restore is not selected. If there is a check mark next to Turn off System Restore, click inside the box to remove the check mark. Click Apply and then OK. If Windows prompts to restart the computer, click Yes. If Windows does not prompt you to restart the computer, close all windows and restart the PC. After the computer restarts, open System Restore. If System Restore is still not working, continue with below. Verify System Restore is active Verify System Restore is active using the steps below: Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click the Administrative Tools icon. Double-click the Computer Management icon. The Computer Management window opens. Click the plus ( +) next to Services and Applications in the left window, and then click Services. Double-click System Restore Services in the right window. The System Restore Service Properties window opens. Verify Startup type is set to Automatic and that Service status is started. If Startup type is not set to Automatic, click the down arrow and select Automatic. Click Apply and then OK. If Windows prompts you to restart the PC, click Yes. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Also, what brand of PC is it. Is this a white box system or a name brand like HP or Compaq? -

Did all what you suggested Cisridn but still not working. sometimes I can create a restore point but when I try to restore the computer, nothing happens. No callandar opens up for me to select a restore point from.

Do you have SP1 installed. There was a problem with System Restore that Microsoft addressed in SP1.
If not, then I suggest downloading and installing SP2 and all of the latest critical updates. |
