I decided to purchase WinXP pro and install it on a machine that used to have W2K on it. After cleaning the hard drive and formatting it I loaded up XP pro.
It comes up to the desktop and that is about it. It has not connectivity to my network. So, I get out the drivers disk for my MoBo and try to install them. That is where I run into the following error. RPC server is unavailable What does this mean? Will I not be able to load up the drivers? In doing research online I see multiple references to service pack 2. Am I going to ave to download service pack 2 in order to continue this build-up? Thanks. |

Do not install the drivers for one version of windows on another without checking to make sure they'll work on the new OS.
XP has native drivers for networks, don't use the 2K install ones unless they're cleared. Download SP2 and burn it to disk. Install it before doing anything else. Get all your driver disks out and make sure they'll work with XP. XP has native network drivers, do not install older ones over them. What updates for drivers did you use?

The drivers are cleared for XP. They came on the CD-Rom for the MoBo manufacturer (Gigabit).
I will locare SP2 for WinXP pro and begin download. |

Downloaded and installed SP2. Now system will not even boot into a desktop.
System cycles with message that the last time Windows was booted in never came up and would I like to select Safe Mode. No matter what I do it cycles back to that screen. What is my next step? Reload the OS again? ( third time) Thanks. |

I'd like to think that three's a charm but it's starting to sound like a hardware problem.
XP is notorious for being alot more picky then previous windows versions when it comes to hardware. So one more time with the OS install and please post your full specs ( motherboard bios version as well please, since that's were the driver install glitched ). This is basically a process of elimination as we narrow down the causes. |

Okay.
I'm checking out your motherboard later today to see if there are any known problems with it or that bios version, and XP (I'm guessing the 512 k is a typo). The best scenario is that you need a bios flash and the worst is that you need to replace hardware. For now download the latest chipset drivers, burn them to disk and see if they install : http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10.html |

Well, some new and interesting news.
The hard drive that I was attemping to put the OS on has gone bye bye. I am certain that is dead. So, until I find the time to get a new this excerise is going to be put on hold. This will allow me to work on my other machine that is have issues. Thank you for your help in this matter. I will post again once I have purchased a new hard drive. Cheers. |
