XP wont recognize second hard drive

I have installed a second hd to my computer running xp but although the slave drive shows up in the BIOS set up, it isnt recognized by windows in my computer or in the device manager or computer management.

The dirves have been configured primary master and primary slave.

first, are you using 80 or 40 counductor cable, if its 80 then both drives should be set to cs or cable select.
second, has the drive been formated yet ?
if not go to control panel, adminstrator tools, computer management, then on the left side click on disk management, then if you see the drive listed there, you can format it from there.
