Can anyone tell me why I have 6 svchost.exe processes in my Task Manager? Shouldn't I just have 1? Is something wrong, because I think it may be using up alot of my memory/processor power.
Thanks to anyone that can help, Brad

Hi blinker97
It's normal to see five or six instances of svchost in Task Manager's Process list. You can think of svchosts like collections of services (rather like a Host at a social event gathers folks together in a group - each svchost.exe 'hosts' various services). Microsoft has a Knowledge Base article about it, which also tells how to use the "Tasklist /SVC" command (without the quotes) in WinXP Pro to show which services are running from each host. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056 The Tasklist /SVC command only works in WinXP Pro. To see what is running from each host in WinXP Home Edition, you can use a third-party free tool such as SysInternals' award-winning applet: "Process Explorer" http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html [if you visit the SysInternals website, browse around = they have quite a few handy tools available - many of them free-of-charge]. Best of luck . . . Gary |
