lsass.exe - Bad Image

need alittle help with this one
a friend just got himself a new comp (first one Ever)
running XP Media
only has a recovery cd
amd64 3700
while in the process takeing mircosoft updates had a power outage
now comp boots up, shows windows screen then goes to black screen, with the message,
"lsass.exe-Bad Image, C:\windows\system32\LSASRV.dll is not a valid Windows image"
cant do anything from here? (no ctrl/alt/delete)
any help would be apperciated

Right after the manufacturer's logo is displayed during boot up, start tapping the F8 key. Hopefully, you'll get the DOS looking screen offering alternate boot options. One of these options should be "Last Known Good Configuration" (or something like that!). See if it will boot from there. Good luck.

thnks Panama Red
took a couple times and bit of tapping but got into that menu
used Last Known Good Configuration
boots up again
now looks like it had nothing to do with the power out,
went to windows update, try to custom or express install, and the computer just locks up, will not respond
restart and gives the same error message
"lsass.exe-Bad Image, C:\windows\system32\LSASRV.dll is not a valid Windows image"
back to F8 to get it to boot again
should be able to get windows updates without a problem i would think?

You're right. You should be able to run Windows Update. The interrupted update may have left something behind though. I'm wondering if this is really a Windows problem or a sasser virus problem. Run the MS malicious removal tool just to be sure.

well finaly got back to me buds computer
ran the microsoft malware , came up, not infected
also run AVG free ,nothing
not sure how to procced from here?
there is nothing on it that needs to be saved
