splat Plagued by Install New Hardware

I am in the process of installing a new HDD currently and will be installing a new video card in a few days. I'm posting here because instructions for the installation of both says that the hardware should be physically installed, windows started, INSTALL HARDWARE WIZARD CANCELED, and their install software used but I can't stop the new hardware wizard from installing the wrong drivers. I have no option to cancel out of the install new hardware process, just bubbles in the lower right corner of the screen informing me it's installing the wrong drivers. Is there a way to disable or cancel the new hardware wizard so I can tell windows that my new HDD is SATA and not Ultra ATA like windows seems to think? I don't even want to know what windows will do with my new vid card if it thinks a SATA is Ultra ATA. . .
If this information is already in the forums I apologise that I was unable to find it.
Thanks for any help y'all may have.

Windows does not differentiate between Ultra ATA and SATA, don't worry about that one. As long as the drivers on your motherboard CD are properly installed, you will be fine. To install a new video card, just uninstall the old drivers, shut down, and swap cards.
