disk cleanup won't work

Disk cleanup won't work on my PC.Keep getting an error massage and send error report dialogue box.Any ideas what could be causing this?HP Pavilion PC running Windows XP Home, installed software includes Adaware,Zone Alarm,Firefox,AVG Antivirus, all of these run and update fine but had a problem with Spybot,it wouldn't update, kept getting "bad checksum" error message so subsequently uninstalled.I have cleaned out temp internet files/cookies/history from within both browser (IE and Firefox) and defragged drive C,disk cleanup still doesn't run.Any help greatly appreciated.

When did you first notice this problem and have you tried a system restore back to before the problem started?

The bad checksum error in Spybot can be cured by using a different download site. Use the drop down triangle to select an alternate source. Most folks have success using the Safer Networking #2 (Europe) site.

Don't know what could be causing the Disk Cleanup issues. How full is your hard drive? Or better stated, how much free space is available on your hdd?

I have a couple of ideas to try. Assuming the Disk Cleanup file is damaged, let's replace it. Go to another PC with XP Home installed and find the Cleanmgr.exe file in the Windows\System32 folder. Copy that file to some medium that will allow you to transport it to your HP. Could be a floppy or usb drive, whatever you have that will work in both machines.

Now go to your HP and go to Control Panel>Folder Options>view tab>check the button for Show hidden files and folders.

Now find the Cleanmgr.exe file on your HP. Again in the Windows/System32 folder. Rename it to Cleanmgr.old. Now copy the Cleanmgr.exe file from the other pc to the System32 folder on your machine. See if it will open correctly now.

If that doesn't work, Delete the added file and rename the old one back to Cleanmgr.exe. Then use the following link to run the System File Checker. Read it thoroughly before your begin.
